2023 High Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon

From budbreak through harvest, the farming and viticulture team executed flawlessly, making strategic decisions throughout the season that built upon one another—particularly important in a cooler, longer growing year. When it came time to pick, we were choosing on our terms. It was truly a winemaker’s vintage.

That patience shows in the wine. The 2023 is high-toned and deeply aromatic, with a perfumed quality and an intensity that comes when the fruit has time to develop complexity alongside ripeness. The tannins are extraordinarily fine-grained, with tremendous volume and presence on the palate.

High Ranch stood out as the best of the best in 2023, and I believe we will be talking about these wines for a long time as we watch them evolve. -Winemaker Sam Kaplan

Soil Composition

The High Ranch vineyard is planted on a sloping knoll that looks west and downward, towards the city of Napa from the Coombsville AVA. The soil beneath the 15% grade is classified as Hambright Series, which consists of very stony loam with a small percentage of clay. As such, the site drains extremely well, and the loose texture is ideal for deep rooting by the vines. The soil composition is moderately acidic and naturally low in organic matter, so the judicious use of nitrogen-fixing cover crops and compost is important to maintain vine health and vigor.

Tasting Notes

2023

A deep purple-black hue and an expressive bouquet of lilacs, wild blueberries, black cherries, and black currant, layered with subtle notes of  esh mint, pencil lead, dried herbs, bay leaf, and earthy minerality.

Rich and full-bodied, the palate is beautifully structured with firm, finely grained tannins, vibrant eshness, and concentrated black  uit. A restrained touch of oak adds depth without overshadowing the vineyard's character, leading to a long, refined, mineral-driven finish.
