2021 High Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon

"2021 will likely be regarded as a classic vintage in Napa’s storied history."

Perched on a knoll above the fog line in the heart of Coombsville, our High Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard basks in the glow of the morning sun as it peers over the wild, rolling landscape of our home estate.

With only 100 cases produced, our first vintage from this newly planted site is full of promise and possibility, reinforcing our commitment to the land while honoring the fabled history and generational legacy that lie in the soil.

Varietal Composition

100% Cabernet Sauvignon

Vineyard

Five-acre High Ranch estate vineyard within Napa Valley’s Coombsville AVA.

Soil Composition

The High Ranch vineyard is planted on a sloping knoll that looks west and downward, towards the city of Napa from the Coombsville AVA. The soil beneath the 15% grade is classified as Hambright Series, which consists of very stony loam with a small percentage of clay. As such, the site drains extremely well, and the loose texture is ideal for deep rooting by the vines. The soil composition is moderately acidic and naturally low in organic matter, so the judicious use of nitrogen-fixing cover crops and compost is important to maintain vine health and vigor.

Aging

24 months new French oak barrels with an additional 24 months in bottle prior to release.

Production

100 cased produced.

Vintage Notes

2021

We simply could not have chosen a better year for our inaugural vintage! The significant diurnal temperature shifts on our property – the “sunny days, cool nights” of winemaking dreams – allow for perfect ripening while maintaining precise acidity. With no rain events to interrupt the final stages of flavor development, our winemaker called for harvest at the exact moment of his choosing. 2021 will likely be regarded as a classic vintage in Napa’s storied history.

Tasting Notes

2021

An expressive nose of bright Bing cherries, red plums, bay laurel, crushed stone and sarsaparilla give way to a palate full of vibrant fruit, spiced cocoa nibs, cassis and hints of toffee. Aged in new French oak for 24 months, with an additional 24 months aging in bottle. The wine's inviting texture is supported by an expressive minerality and tension-filled acidity that carry through the supple and lengthy finish.
